Jack Russell Rescue

This past Saturday we headed out bright and early to Conyers, GA to volunteer at the Georgia Jack Russell Rescue. Members helped to lay new hay for the dogs, construct shelter to help keep the dogs warm in the winter, raked leaves, and helped to exercise the dogs. It was a very productive morning! We also delivered items from a wish list for the rescue. Members raised money to buy the items through Taste of Suwanee and a dog wash. We plan on visiting this rescue again in January - more info to come. If you would like more info on this rescue, please the website: http://www.jackrusselladoption.com.

Here is a message sent to the sponsors this morning from Donna Durham, who runs the rescue:

"You should be so proud of your group and I know you are!! Those girls worked so hard and what great team work!! They are all so sweet. I cried as I looked at all the wonderful gifts you brought to our rescue. The girls worked so hard to earn the money and then to spend it on our rescue. I felt so special and the dogs were so excited as I gave them bones yesterday. They have sweaters today and it is so cold.

Sally was so impressed with the girls. She thinks a lot of young people today do not measure up to your group. She is right!! The girls are so wonderful. I am so proud of them!!! They just jumped right in and went right to work.

You have no idea how much that meant to me. It is a very emotional month for me and your group made Saturday really special for me and the doggies. Please let each and every one of them know how special I think they are!

I have to tell you Peyton was so worn out he just laid in his house the rest of the day or he was lonely you left without him!! One day I would love for all of you to come out not work and just have a fun day playing with the dogs."

Taste of Suwanee

For the first time ever, the Humane Society Club had a booth at Taste of Suwanee. Our club this year has grown from a small 10 members last year to over 50 members this year. Because of our numbers, we have some serious potential to raise some major money for local animal rescue groups this year. We also are doing some awesome volunteer activities to help all kinds of animals in need.

Our concept for year's event (which features restaurants from all over the area and is sponsored by the school) was to treat your pet as well, since you are getting some great food. The students all baked a couple dozen dog treats, in all flavors and we hosted a "Bulldog Bone Buffet". As you can see from our colorful tent, the buffet was set up at the table in the front and for 5 tickets, patrons would receive a ziplock bag to fill with treats of their choice.

We also partnered up with the local SPCA and they brought over 3 dogs for adoption. Two were incredibly cute puppies, and one was an adult chihuahua. However, sadly, in the end none of them were adopted. However, the SPCA got a lot of publicity as we were very popular because we had puppies! :)

All in all a very successful day! Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you who came out and worked the event, baked treats, or helped with the posters! Don't forget to bring your community service logs by for me to sign!

Dog Wash

This past Saturday many of our members came out to Suwanee Animal Hospital for a Dog Wash to raise money for local animal rescues. We washed 20+ dogs and raised $240! This will go a long way in helping animals in need!

Next event - Taste of Suwanee on Oct. 16th! We will have a tent with a "Bone Bar", raising money for animals in need! Every member is asked to bake some dog treats and drop them off at school on Friday, Oct. 15th!

Reminder Email

Good morning students and parents,

Welcome to the Humane Society Club at North Gwinnett! If you are receiving this email it is because you have already turned in your application and fees for the year. This is also a reminder that all t-shirt orders are due by Friday, Sept. 10th. Forms can be found on our website, www.nghsc.blogspot.com, and t-shirts cost $7 each.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 14th at 2:30pm in T-22. We will be discussing our dog wash, other volunteer opportunities, and the Taste of Suwanee. If you have a suggestion of an organization we could volunteer with, or would benefit from our help, please bring the information to our meeting.

This Saturday, Sept. 11th from 11am-1pm we will be attending orientation at the North Wind Equestrian Center, Horse Rescue, Relief and Retirement Fund, Inc. All students who would like to volunteer at a later time, must attend orientation. If a student is under 18 years old, a parent must accompany the student during the initial orientation. Also, all students must have the form (located under files in the google group) signed and completed the day of orientation. Directions are also on the form. The horse rescue is located in Cumming, and is approx. 30 minutes away. If you are interested, we will be meeting in the back (theater) parking lot at NGHS at 10:15am and can car pool to the location (maps will also be available). Important - if you are planning to attend the orientation on Saturday, please email us your name, your parent's name(s), and any other sibling(s) that might be coming along. Also, please let us know if you plan on meeting us at the school or meeting us at the farm. We don't want to leave anyone behind! Please email this information by Friday.

Thank you, and please let us know if you have any questions!

Thanks,

Horse Rescue

We have found a horse rescue for our volunteer work! The North Wind Equestrian Center, Horse Rescue, Relief, and Retirement Fund, Inc. is located in Cumming, GA, about 30 minutes from the school. To first volunteer we all need to attend the 2 hour training session about caring for horses on September 11th from 11-1pm. Your parents will have to sign a liability release form (the form will be given out at our Aug. 31st meeting, and it will be posted in the google group), and if you are under 18 (probably almost everyone), you will need to bring a parent with you for this training session.

After you have completed the training session, we can go in groups to the rescue and work with the horses in a variety of activities. This session also counts toward your community service. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Guilarte in T-16 or Mrs. Lusher in T-22!

Meeting recap, t-shirts, and a horse rescue

At yesterday's meeting we handed out applications, discussed activities for the club, and voted on a meeting day (Tuesday). We also set the date for the next meeting, August 31st at 2:30 in T-22. T-shirt colors were chosen and voted on...we are just trying to match the colors to those available from the printer. Below is the basic t-shirt design:

T-shirts will be approximately $7 each, and we will begin taking orders as soon as the shirt color is finalized. We also planned a Dog Wash for October 2nd at Suwanee Animal Hospital. At the dog wash we would like the have a doggie bake sale, as well as offer bandannas to those dogs who get a bath.

This year we would like to branch out, and also work with a horse rescue. Does anyone know of one in the immediate area? If so, please contact our president or one of the sponsors.

Finally, at our next meeting we will be electing our remaining officer positions for this school year. We have the following positions available: secretary, treasurer, and historian. The secretary is responsible for taking notes at meetings and helping to promote the club. The treasurer will help collect money and keep track on our fundraising efforts. The historian will document everything we do through pictures, and scrapbook.

Questions? See our google group, ask a sponsor, or officer!
